ScoZu Guide

How to use ScoZu on the Xteink X4 Pro and in the Pocket ScoZu iPhone app.

On the X4 Pro, Settings › System › How-To Guide shows a code that opens this page on your phone; the iPhone app has a How-To Guide link on its main page.

1. Getting started

ScoZu is a reading system for the Xteink X4 Pro: books, articles, flashcards, daily puzzles and your stats, made for an e-ink screen. Everything runs on the X4 Pro and no account is needed. The Pocket ScoZu iPhone app runs the same ScoZu on your phone, and can send things to and from your X4 Pro.

Installing and updating

Install ScoZu from scozu.thatmess.com/install with Chrome or Edge on a computer and a USB-C cable, or with the update file on the SD card. Updating is the same: install again. Your books, settings and progress stay on the SD card.

Home

Home shows the book you're reading under Continue Reading with how far you are; tap it to carry on. Below are the tiles:

  • Library: your books, by cover, title or author.
  • Feeds: articles from the sites you follow, and links you send.
  • Flip It: flashcards from words you look up, lines you highlight, or your own lists.
  • Scoutle and ZumiZen: a daily word game and daily puzzles.
  • Cards: your business card, a QR code or a picture, full screen.
  • Stats: time read, books finished and your yearly goal.
  • Files: everything on the SD card.
  • Connect: Wi-Fi Transfer, USB Drive, Send to iPhone and Sync Now.
  • Settings.

The small star near the top of Home opens ScoZmic, your daily reading of the sky. Feeds, Flip It, Scoutle, ZumiZen, Cards and Stats can each be taken off Home with Show on Home in Settings › Apps.

2. Touch and buttons

The X4 Pro from the front: the round Home key centred below the screen, the Left button on the left edge a quarter of the way down, the Right button on the right edge at the same height, and the small Power button on the right edge near the top, above Right. The X4 Pro is mostly touch. It also has a Home key just below the screen, two side buttons (Left and Right) and the Power button. A hold is about half a second.

In the iPhone app, the bar under the screen has Back, Home (it works like the Home key) and Exit.

3. Getting books and articles on

ScoZu reads EPUB books (and Xteink's XTC page files), plus text and Markdown files as documents. Books you add show up in Library; copy-protected books from shops and libraries can't be opened, and ScoZu says so.

From your iPhone

With the Pocket ScoZu app, share a book, a web page or a picture to ScoZu and choose your X4 Pro. It waits in the app until your X4 Pro is on the same Wi-Fi with Connect › Wi-Fi Transfer open, then goes straight over. See Pocket ScoZu for pairing.

Over Wi-Fi with scozu.local

Open Connect › Wi-Fi Transfer on the X4 Pro. On a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi, open scozu.local in the browser (or the address the X4 Pro shows). From there you can add books, follow sites and send articles to Feeds, make Cards, import Flip It groups, see your highlights and change settings. No Wi-Fi nearby? Connect › Hotspot makes one.

Add scozu.local to your phone's Home Screen to open it like an app.

USB Drive and the SD card

Connect › USB Drive turns the X4 Pro into a drive on your computer: drag books into the books folder, then eject it. You can also take the SD card out and copy books on directly. Connect › Calibre works with Calibre's wireless device connection.

4. Reading

Open a book from Continue Reading on Home, from Library or from Files. ScoZu remembers your place in every book.

The reader menu

Tap the middle of the page (or hold the Home key) to open the menu. It shows the chapter, your progress, previous and next chapter, and three panels:

  • Contents: chapters, your bookmarks and your highlights.
  • Text: font, size, spacing and margins.
  • More: Night, Light, Rotate and Auto-Turn, Go to %, Screenshot and Clear Book Cache.

The bookmark icon above the book's title adds or removes a bookmark on this page; ‹ Library takes you back.

Look Up

Hold any word, then lift, to see what it means. The first time, ScoZu offers to download its dictionary over Wi-Fi (about 9 MB); the install page can also copy it over USB. Words you look up can become Flip It cards.

Highlights and notes

Hold a word and drag across the text to highlight it. Find them all in Contents › Highlights: tap one to go there, hold it to add a note or remove it. They're also on scozu.local, and ScoZu Cloud keeps them in step across your devices.

Time left and the end of a book

The status bar can show the time left in the chapter or the book (Settings › Reader › Status Bar); ScoZu learns how fast you read. At the end of a book, ScoZu offers the next books in the same folder, or Home.

5. Your Library and Files

Library shows your books as covers or as a list. Sort with Recent, Title and Author at the bottom; the filter at the top shows reading, read or new books, your Collections and Series; the magnifier searches.

  • Hold a book for options: Mark as Read, Stats, Rename, Pin to Top, Add to Collection, Remove from Library, Delete, Select and Send to My iPhone.
  • Select several: hold a book, choose Select, then tap the others.
  • Books join the Library when you add them or first open them.

Files shows everything on the SD card, folder by folder. Hold a file or folder to open, rename, delete, send it to your iPhone or add it to the Library.

6. Feeds, Flip It and the other apps

Feeds

Follow sites on scozu.local (Apps › Feeds) or in the iPhone app. ScoZu checks them, skips the unreliable ones, and saves each new article as a clean page without the clutter. On the X4 Pro, Feeds groups articles by site; sort by Recent, A–Z or Unread. Hold an article to Keep it or delete it. Read articles are cleared away after a while (Settings › Apps › Feeds); kept ones stay.

Flip It

Flashcards from the words you look up and the lines you highlight, or your own: import a CSV, Excel or Anki file on scozu.local. Tap a card to flip it, then Again or Got It. Hold a group for options: Reset Got Its, Shuffle Cards, Clear Cards, or Delete Group for one you imported (it goes from your other devices too). Hold a card while studying to remove it.

Cards

Your business card, a QR code or any picture, full screen and ready to show; tap or swipe to flip it. Make them on scozu.local (Cards › New Card). Hold a card to make it the default, rename it or send it to your iPhone. A card can also show on the lock screen.

Stats

Three tabs. Overview: your yearly goal, time read today, this week and this year, your streak and pace. Month: a calendar of the month, each day darker the more you read; tap a day for what you read, and swipe (or tap ‹ ›) for other months. Books: what you're reading and what you've finished; tap one for its stats. Set a yearly goal in Settings › Apps › Stats. With ScoZu Cloud, Stats add up all your devices.

Opened a book just to check something? Hold it in Books, or use Remove from Stats on its page: its time so far stops counting. The book and your place in it stay.

ScoZmic

Tap the star on Home for today's reading: your horoscope, the moon, the planets and meteor showers. Set it up, or turn it off, in Settings › Apps › ScoZmic. Only the horoscope goes online.

7. Scoutle and ZumiZen

New puzzles every day, the same on all your devices, made for an e-ink screen. Each game has its own how-to and keeps your streaks and results. Once you've solved today's, hold the puzzle to play another (practice ones don't count).

  • Scoutle: guess the day's word.
  • ZumiBee: make words from seven letters, always using the centre one.
  • ZumiOku: fill the grid with 1 to 9 (sudoku).
  • ZumiGrams: fill the squares to uncover a picture (nonograms).
  • ZumiGlow: light every square with bulbs.
  • ZumiCamp: put a tent beside every tree.
  • ZumiBridges: join the islands with bridges.

Words you miss can go to Flip It. Stuck? Most puzzles can show one square or the whole answer; that day then doesn't count.

8. Pocket ScoZu on iPhone

The ScoZu iPhone app runs ScoZu on your phone, and sends books, articles and pictures to and from your X4 Pro. It has its own guide: see the iPhone app tab.

9. ScoZu Cloud

Optional and free. ScoZu Cloud keeps your X4 Pro and the app in step and backs up your ScoZu. It keeps where you are in each book, highlights and notes, bookmarks, settings such as text size, reading speed, stats, game progress, Flip It, and the sites you follow. Books and articles themselves stay on each device.

Connecting

Open Settings › Connections › ScoZu Cloud and scan the code with your phone, or sign in at cloud.thatmess.com and enter the code. Sign in with Apple, Google or a passkey.

Sync

Sync chooses when: When I Read (as the X4 Pro sleeps and wakes), Daily at a time you pick, or Off. With When I Read or Daily, it also syncs whenever the X4 Pro goes online anyway, for Wi-Fi Transfer or Send to iPhone. Last Synced says when it last ran and what came over. Connect › Sync Now, or Sync Now on this screen, syncs at once. A book read on another device opens asking whether to continue from there.

Backups

ScoZu backs up once a day, and Sync Now backs up straight away. See and Restore lists your backups by kind (Feeds & Cards, Flip It, Games, Highlights & Notes, Library, Reading & Stats, Settings); pick one to restore it, or Everything to restore them all at once. Before restoring, ScoZu backs up what's there, so nothing is lost.

Disconnecting and your account

Disconnect on this screen, or on the website, stops syncing; the device's backups stay on the website. To delete your account and everything stored with it, sign in at cloud.thatmess.com, choose Delete Account… and type DELETE.

10. Settings worth knowing

  • System Font (Settings › Display): Lexend, Atkinson Hyperlegible Next or IBM Plex Mono for menus and screens.
  • Reading Text (Settings › Reader): the font, size and spacing for books, also in the reader's Text panel.
  • Light: swipe down from the top edge. Three presets (Day, Evening and Bedtime); hold one to save the current light to it or rename it.
  • Sleep After (Settings › System): how long before the X4 Pro sleeps on its own.
  • Passcode (Settings › System › Passcode): asked for when the X4 Pro wakes after you held Power to sleep, or after it slept on its own.
  • Controls (Settings › Controls): how buttons and touch behave; see Touch and buttons.
  • Show on Home (Settings › Apps): which apps have a tile on Home.
  • Clock (Settings › System › Clock): time zone, 12 or 24 hours, and Sync Time Now.

11. Troubleshooting and help

Something looks stuck

Settings › System › Restart restarts ScoZu; your place and settings are kept. If it doesn't respond at all, hold the power button for a few seconds.

"ScoZu Restarted"

If something goes wrong, ScoZu restarts by itself and says so. It saves crash_report.txt on the SD card: please email it to us so we can fix it.

A book looks wrong

In the book, open the reader menu's More › Clear Book Cache; ScoZu lays it out again next time. Settings › System › Reset Book Cache does every book, but your place in each is lost.

Going back to Xteink's firmware

CrossPoint's flash tools can install the official Xteink firmware at any time. Your books on the SD card stay.

Still stuck?

Email less.of@thatmess.com: tell us what you were doing, what you expected and what happened instead; a photo of the screen helps. See also Support.
